At the beginning of the 19th century, Thomas Reynolds migrated to the Alentejo region with the aim of working in the cork business. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds acquired the Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. In 1901 the first vineyards were planted on the estate, and in 1929 construction began on a traditional cellar and a distillery that still today produces the Mouchão brandy. Today the Herdade do Mouchão remains managed by descendants of the original family, and the entire winemaking process is virtually unchanged, preserving hand‑harvest and grape fermentation in stone vats using foot‑treading. It is these techniques and the estate’s long‑standing success story that keep this wine‑making company so close to the wines of yesteryear. (illustrative image only)
