In the early 19th century Thomas Reynolds migrated to the Alentejo region to pursue a cork business. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds acquired the Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. In 1901 the first vines were planted, and in 1929 construction began on a traditional cellar and a distillery that still today produces Mouchão brandy. Today the estate remains managed by the original family’s descendants, and the winemaking process is virtually unchanged, preserving hand‑harvest and fermentation of grapes in stone vats with foot‑treading. These techniques and the estate’s success story keep Mouchão wines close to the wines of old.
