In the early 19th century, Thomas Reynolds migrated to the Alentejo region with the aim of entering the cork trade. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds acquired the Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. In 1901 the first vines were planted on the estate, and in 1929 construction began on a traditional cellar and a distillery that still produces Mouchão Brandy today. Today the Herdade do Mouchão is still managed and worked by descendants of the original family, and the winemaking process remains virtually unchanged, preserving the traditional hand‑harvest and fermentation of grapes in stone troughs, with foot‑pumping. These techniques, together with the estate’s long‑standing success, keep this viticultural company as close as possible to the wines of old. (Illustrative image only)
