Vinícola de Nelas S.A. was founded in 1939 and has been devoted to the trade of wines and their derivatives from the outset. Its facilities are located in Nelas, the heart of the Dão Wine Region. In 1990 a new vinification centre was built, capable of processing 3,500 tonnes of grapes at harvest time and equipped with the latest technology to fully exploit the potential of the local grapes. Using grapes from the Dão, Vinícola de Nelas boasts a storage capacity of 4 million litres, making it one of the largest private cellars in the area. The wines are produced from the region’s typical varieties—Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro Preto, Jaén and Tinta Roriz for reds, and Encruzado, Arinto do Dão, Borrado das Moscas and Cercial for whites. Our wines regularly earn accolades at national and international competitions; the 1992 “ESCANÇÃO” white won a Gold Medal at the Challenge International du Vin in 1995, the 1995 white and the 1997, 1998 and 2001 reds received an Honourable Mention, and in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003 silver medals at the C.V.R.
