This Robustus from Niepoort is a wonderfully defiant wine, considering its four years spent in oak. Those hints of coffee and cigar notes in the aroma speak volumes about the schistous terroir – it delivers a delightfully spicy and almost cheeky balsamic character. On the palate, it’s impressively broad, with beautifully refined tannins, a clear reflection of Dirk Niepoort’s philosophy of letting the grapes express their youth and character (featuring Sousaão, Touriga Nacional, Aragonez and Rufete). Perfect with a grilled fish or a hearty beef stew, naturally.
