In the national wine scene, there is no producer more universally respected than Niepoort, and its long history begins in 1842, when the first Van der Niepoort arrived in Portugal. Entering the Port wine trade as a merchant, he quickly established a business that would prove prosperous and enduring. Thus, in the 5th generation, Dirk Niepoort was born, an indispensable figure in the world of wine and one of the most important personalities who has worked, and continues to work, for Portuguese wine. He has collaborated with several dozen producers, helping them improve their wines and better understand their vineyards, while also preparing his own legacy alongside those with whom he constantly creates irreverent wines.
