Vinícola de Nelas SA was founded in 1939 and has been dedicated from the outset to the trade of wines and their derivatives. Its facilities are located in Nelas, the heart of the Dão Wine Region. In 1990 a new winemaking centre was built, with a production capacity of 3,500 tonnes of grapes at harvest time and with more recent equipment suitable for harnessing all the potential of the grapes grown here. Using wine and grapes from the Dão region, Vinícola de Nelas has a storage capacity of 4 million litres, making it one of the largest private wineries in the area. The wines are produced from the typical Dão grapes—especially Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro Preto, Jaén and Tinta Roriz for reds, and Encruzado, Arinto do Dão, Borrado das Moscas and Cercial for whites. Our wines regularly win awards at national and international competitions: the 1992 “ESCANÇÃO” White won a Gold Medal at the Challenge International du Vin in 1995; the 1995 white harvest and reds from 1997, 1998 and 2001 received an Honorable Mention; and in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003 they earned silver medals at the C.V.R. Dão competition “Best Wine of the Dão in Production”. (illustrative image only)
