Tawny wines are red wines made from the same grapes as Ruby, but they age only two to three years in small barrels before being transferred to larger casks. This allows the wine to come into greater contact with the wood and with air. As a result, the Tawny wines “breathe” more, oxidizing and aging rapidly. Because of the high level of oxidation, Tawny wines lose the original red hue, taking on lighter tones such as amber, and develop flavors of dried fruit—nuts and almonds. With age, Tawny wines gain even greater aromatic complexity, enriching their bouquet. The bottling year may not match the year shown in the image (illustrative only).
