The Quinta da Pacheca, one of the most well‑known estates in the Douro, is notable for being among the first to bottle its own branded wines. The estate’s name has been recorded since 17 April 1738, when a dated document first mentioned the “Quinta da Pacheca” because its owner was D. Mariana Pacheco Pereira. It was only in 1903 that D. José Freire de Serpa Pimentel decided to pursue his growing interest in oenology, purchasing the property with the aim of dedicating himself to viticulture. Today, a century later, the new generation of the Serpa Pimentel family runs the estate: Maria, Catarina, and José are the young faces of this family‑run venture. (Illustrative image)
