Description

Located in a region that has always been viticultural, the main activity of the estate over the years has been winemaking. In the mid‑20th century, Artur de Menezes Corrêa de Sá, an agronomist by training, devoted much of his work to banking but remained closely involved in agriculture, especially viticulture, and was among the founders of the Portuguese Viticulturists’ Union. It was under his leadership, albeit already guided by his eldest son José de Menezes Corrêa de Sá (to whom he early handed over the house’s management), that the first row‑planted vines with mechanised spacing were established on the property, initially with animal‑drawn implements, then machinery, and even aerial methods for treatments—pioneering practices at the time. Studying new vinification techniques, including lessons from the distinguished technologist Batalha Reis, and later in the 1950s, a complete overhaul of the cellar, enabled the appearance in the 1960s of quality wines bottled under the Plátanos label, which later, with the creation of the Demarcated Region, became known as Quinta dos Plátanos.
