Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest family winery still in operation in the municipality of Anadia, and in the 1930s—after the ban on producing Port outside Vila Nova de Gaia—it shifted to selling table wines from Bairrada. In the late 1950s the celebrated Bairrada label “Frei João” was launched, and a little later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region.
