Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family company that initially focused on the sale of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today the company is the oldest still-operating family winery in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, following the prohibition of port wine production outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it began marketing table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, one of the most celebrated brands of Bairrada wine was born – “Frei João” – and a little later the brand “Porta dos Cavaleiros” was launched in the demarcated region of Dão.
