Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. It became the oldest still‑operating family winery in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition of port wine production outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it began trading table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, the renowned “Frei João” brand was launched, and a little later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” label entered the demarcated Dão region. (Illustrative image only)
