Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that originally focused on selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest still‑operating family‑owned wine estate in the municipality of Anadia, having shifted to trading Bairrada table wines in the 1930s after the ban on producing Porto wine outside Vila Nova de Gaia. At the end of the 1950s, the celebrated “Frei João” brand of Bairrada was launched, followed a bit later by the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” label from the demarcated Dão region.
