Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on distributing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. It remains today the oldest family‑owned winery still operating in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the ban on producing Port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company began marketing Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 1950s, one of Bairrada’s most celebrated brands – “Frei João” – was born, followed a little later by the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region.
