Founded in 1920 by the Costa brothers, José, Manuel, and Albano, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. It is today the oldest still‑operating family winery in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, following the ban on producing Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it began selling table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, one of the region’s most celebrated wine brands was born – “Frei João” – and a little later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” label emerged from the demarcated Dão region.
