Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, founded in 1922 under the name João Pires & Filhos, has come a long way, establishing itself as one of Portugal’s most innovative wine producers. The company began by making wines from grapes grown in the Palmela region. In the 1980s Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal started expanding, acquiring estates across the country and setting new standards for quality wine production. Quinta da Bacalhôa, considered the finest estate from the first half of the 15th century still in existence in Portugal, is an old royal property. Located in Azeitão, the estate and the famous Palácio da Bacalhôa form an artistic monument of great national significance. Today the Quinta belongs to the Fundação Berardo, a family foundation headed by Comendador José Berardo. On 23 June 1910 it was declared a National Monument. Around the Quinta, visitors can explore picturesque villages, cellars, and one of Portugal’s most stunning and imposing landscapes – the Arrábida Natural Park. (Illustrative image)
