Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, founded in 1922 under the name João Pires & Filhos, has walked a long path, establishing itself as one of Portugal’s most innovative wine producers. The company began by producing wines from grapes grown in the Palmela region. Throughout the 1980s, Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal started to expand, acquiring vineyards across the country and creating new paradigms for quality wine production. Considered the most beautiful estate from the first half of the 15th century still existing in Portugal, Quinta da Bacalhôa is an old property of the Portuguese Royal House. Located in Azeitão, the estate and the famed Palácio da Bacalhôa form an artistic monument of great significance to the nation. Today, Quinta da Bacalhôa belongs to the Fundação Berardo, a family foundation headed by Comendador José Berardo. On June 23, 1910 it was declared a National Monument. In the surroundings of Quinta da Bacalhôa, visitors find picturesque villages, cellars, and one of Portugal’s most beautiful and imposing landscapes – the Arrábida Natural Park.
