This wine from Quinta da Carolina is a delightful, if slightly demanding, experience. Built on a foundation of Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional and Aragonez, it boldly showcases the Douro’s character while retaining a grace only achieved by vines grown facing north. Expect vibrant herbal notes, reflecting that exposure, mingling with fresh fruit, and a luxurious texture thanks to barrel ageing – a subtle influence from both French and American oak, alongside the distinctive character of the rare Rufete grape. Seriously, it’s fantastic with grilled red meats or mushroom dishes, and frankly, it’s best enjoyed young, but with the knowledge it’ll only get richer and more complex with time.
