Description

“This Quinta da Pedra Escrita is a wonderfully perplexing wine. It seems utterly dedicated to bottling every single nuance of the Douro Superior’s granite soils. The winemaking is remarkably meticulous – hand-harvested in 15kg boxes, cold fermentation with constant battonage, and aging in used French oak that clearly has a long history with the grapes. At an average altitude of 575 metres and on purely granitic, sandy, impoverished soils, it’s clear the terroir is the key. The team’s conviction is that keeping the wine ‘breathing’ through battonage, and never straying from the original, is paramount. The result is a wine brimming with citrus and mineral aromas – think mandarin and exotic fruits – and a remarkable freshness that, according to the producers, is a direct reflection of its stony origins. It’s a wine desperately striving for authenticity, a testament to a producer’s obsession with capturing the very soul of the Douro. And, if we believe them, it deserves a thoughtful pairing with sheep’s cheese and smoked fish – a match as obsessed with its provenance as the wine itself.”
