Croft The climate in 2018 was somewhat irregular and at times challenging, but in the end the conditions needed to create an excellent Porto Vintage came together. The year began extremely dry, as very little rain had fallen the previous year, and by January around two-thirds of Portugal's land area was suffering from drought. Stress on the vines caused by the arid conditions was relieved in March by heavy rainfall. The weather station at Quinta da Roêda recorded 223 mm of precipitation that month. This replenished the groundwater reserves depleted the previous year, and this soil moisture proved decisive during the ripening season. The weather remained cool and humid until the end of June, and the vine cycle was about three weeks behind the previous year's calendar. A dry and relatively mild July was followed by a hot August, with temperatures well above 40 °C recorded early in the month in the easternmost areas of the Douro Valley. The intense heat accelerated the cycle. The abundant water reserves in the soil, built up during the spring, meant that the grapes ripened evenly and gradually despite the hot conditions. Harvest at Quinta da Roêda began on 17 September, under hot, dry weather. Yields were low, but the wines showed excellent colour intensity, very good acid balance, and elegance and freshness of fruit. Allergen information Contains sulphites. SKU: 105645
