The Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (first record dated 1616), is located on the banks of the Douro River next to the city of Régua, in the heart of the world's oldest demarcated region, the Douro. At the estate's quay, Rabelo boats would dock to load the barrels full of Port wine and transport them to Gaia, at the mouth of the river, where they were sold in bulk to the world, leaving behind their hidden identity since these wooden casings were not even marked with the producer's seal. At the destination, the wine was bottled and labelled with the brand of the foreign merchants who bought it, some of whom went on to gain quite a reputation. The year of bottling may not correspond to the image presented. (illustrative image only)
