This 40‑year‑old Tawny Port from Quinta da Vacaria displays a golden amber hue with greenish reflections and is brimming with surprising aromas and flavours. On the nose it offers a unique complexity, unveiling intense notes of dried fruit, spices and roasted coffee. On the palate it is powerful and dense, with an impressive volume that culminates in a long, rich and unforgettable finish. Until around 1756, the “shipping wines” that were then called Port Wines followed the so‑called “old process” of winemaking. Fortification, always in small quantities, occurred only after fermentation had finished, yielding dry wines. In 1820 the modern fortification process emerged, in which the halt of alcoholic fermentation produced sweet wines. This method only became widespread in 1852, when Port Wines began to resemble those of today. Thus, Port Wine is a fortified wine produced in the Demarcated Region of the Douro, under unique conditions stemming from natural and human factors. The traditional production process includes stopping the must’s fermentation by adding grape brandy, bottling the wines, and then ageing them. Ports are divided into different categories based on ageing style, ranging from Ruby, Tawny, White, to Rosé. The bottling year may not match the image presented (illustrative only).
