The Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (its earliest record dates back to 1616), is located on the banks of the Douro River near the town of Régua, in the heart of the world’s oldest demarcated region, the Douro. At the estate’s dock, Rabelo barges would load barrels of Port wine and carry them to Gaia, at the mouth of the river, where they were sold wholesale worldwide. The barrels’ identities were hidden, as the wooden casks were not even marked with the producer’s seal. Once in Gaia, the wine was bottled and labeled with the mark of the foreign merchants who purchased it, some of whom later gained considerable prestige. The year of bottling may not correspond to the image presented. (Illustrative image only)
