The Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (first record dated 1616), is located on the banks of the Douro River near the city of Régua, in the heart of the world’s oldest demarcated region, the Douro. At the estate’s dock, Rabelo boats would dock to load their barrels with Port wine and transport them to Gaia, at the mouth of the river, where they were sold wholesale worldwide. The barrels’ wooden staves were unmarked, and the wine’s identity was hidden once it left the estate, as the wooden barrels were not even stamped with the producer’s seal. Once at its destination, the wine was bottled and labeled with the brand of the foreign merchants who purchased it, some of whom gained considerable prestige. (Illustrative image)
