Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (first recorded in 1616), is situated on the banks of the Douro River next to the town of Régua, in the heart of the world's oldest demarcated wine region, the Douro. At the estate’s quay, Rabelo boats would dock to load their long barges full of Port wine and transport them to Gaia at the mouth of the river, where they were sold in bulk worldwide. Their identity was concealed, as these wooden hulls bore no producer’s seal. At the destination, the wine was bottled and labeled with the brand of the foreign merchants who bought it, some of whom went on to gain considerable prestige. (illustrative image)
