The Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (first record dates to 1616), is located on the banks of the Douro River next to the town of Régua, in the heart of the world’s oldest demarcated region, the Douro. At the estate’s quay, Rabelo boats would dock to load baskets full of Port wine and carry them to Gaia, at the mouth of the river, where they were sold in bulk worldwide, leaving behind their hidden identity as these wooden barrels were not even marked with the producer’s seal. At the destination, the wine was bottled and labeled with the brand of the foreign merchants who acquired it, some of whom gained considerable prestige.
