Quinta do Cardo is located in the Beira Interior region, Castelo Rodrigo sub-region, close to the village of the same name. The vineyards, planted at an average altitude of 750 m, are sheltered by the Marofa and Castelo Rodrigo mountain ranges and flanked by the Douro, Coa and Águeda rivers. Covering 180 ha in total, 69 ha are vineyards—all certified as organic—while the rest contain extensive cork oak reserves and natural forest. The first vines were planted in 1932, and the quality of the wines has consistently been recognised over the years. The Companhia das Quintas acquired the estate in 2001, maintaining the unquestionable quality of the whites and demonstrating the region’s potential for quality reds. With an uncommon style in Portugal, the estate’s reds feature balsamic notes, bright freshness and complexity.
