The Poço do Lobo estate was acquired by the Caves São João in 1971 and is a rustic property of about 37 hectares, located in the small locality of Pocariça in the municipality of Cantanhede. After the acquisition, the estate was restructured with the planting of new grape varieties alongside the traditional ones, to innovate while never losing its ancestral ties. Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, the Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest family wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia; in the 1930s, following the ban on producing Port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it shifted to selling Bairrada table wines. By the late 1950s, the renowned Bairrada brand “Frei João” was launched, and a few years later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region emerged. (illustrative image only)
