Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that originally focused on marketing fine wines from the Douro and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest family winery still operating in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the ban on producing Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company switched to selling table wines from Bairrada. By the late 1950s, one of Bairrada’s most celebrated wine brands was born – “Frei João” – and a little later the brand “Porta dos Cavaleiros” from the demarcated region of the Dão was launched.
