Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest family wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition of producing Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company began trading table wines from Bairrada. By the late 1950s, it launched one of the most celebrated wine brands in the Bairrada region – “Frei João” – and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region.
