Quinta do Vale Meão In 1877 D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, already the owner of the largest agricultural estate in the Douro, bought at a public auction 300 hectares of virgin land in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa. Her dream was to build from scratch a model estate, realizing in it the extensive experience she had accumulated over her life as a Dourade businesswoman. Her pioneering work in the Upper Douro stemmed from the conviction that here excellent Port wines could be produced. The grapes from the Quinta were the foundation of some of the best Ports issued from Gaia. Today the Quinta remains in the hands of her descendants, who over the last two decades have devoted themselves to selecting Port wine lots with the aim of launching Tawnies indicating age. To that end they equipped one of the two cellars built on the estate by her ancestor with oak barrels, toneis and pipas for aging these Ports derived exclusively from the estate’s vineyards. It is with well‑deserved pride that the fourth and sixth generations revive the family tradition after patiently waiting for the right moment to showcase these wines to the world.
