Quinta do Vesuvio The Quinta do Vesúvio is one of the largest estates in the Douro and one of its most important. The magnificent house, chapel, and cellar were built in 1827. The 137‑hectare vineyard is predominantly north‑ and west‑facing and rises from 110 m along the river to 450 m. This property produces exceptionally balanced wines, among the best in the entire region. The soil is mainly clayey, with small granite formations. Touriga Nacional Touriga Nacional is one of the two most important grape varieties for the Vesúvio red wine and grows in Quinta Nova at 450 m altitude, with a westward exposure. This area of the estate was acquired by Dona Antónia Ferreira in the mid‑19th century, and she could not have imagined the importance that these high‑altitude vines would have for the estate’s red wines in the 21st century. Winemaking Process The Vesúvio grapes, hand‑picked at the ideal point of ripeness in 20‑kg baskets, are transported to the cellar. Upon arrival, the bunches undergo an initial manual sorting, followed by a gentle de‑stem, after which the berries are selected before being fed by gravity into small fermentation tanks. Crushing occurs only during the gravity‑driven entry into the tank, thereby avoiding unwanted oxidation. Fermentations are monitored and adjusted to bring out the best from each grape variety. A post‑fermentation maceration follows to extract tannins from the seeds, which complement those from the skins, promoting a broader mouthfeel and increasing the wine’s aging potential. The goal is to produce a wine with exceptional concentration, intensity, complexity, and, naturally, great longevity. Maturation and Aging The wine matures for 10 months in 400‑liter new French oak barrels. After bottling, it undergoes an additional 6 months of aging. Undoubtedly, this is a cellaring wine with great aging potential. However, thanks to its well‑architected structure—combining power and elegance—it can be enjoyed from the moment.
