Description

The properties of Casa Santos Lima are located in the municipality of Alenquer, 45 km north of Lisbon, in a region where viticultural tradition is ancient and typical rural landscapes appear with great beauty. The vineyards extend over gentle slopes at elevations between 100 and 220 meters, with excellent sun exposure and a climate moderated by the mild maritime breeze from the Atlantic Ocean, about 26 km away. The predominant soil type is clay–limestone from the Upper Jurassic period, where numerous examples of marine fossils have been found, even traces of dinosaurs (Apatosaurus alenquerensis). Vineyard replanting has been carried out regularly since 1990 with the finest Portuguese varieties, which here exhibit a unique regional character, as well as, on a smaller scale, the best international varieties. In the more than 200 hectares of vineyards owned by the Santos Lima family, a vast diversity of grape varieties can be found. Kosher wine is produced in accordance with Jewish dietary laws (kashrut). To be considered kosher, it must be made by observant Jews using kosher equipment and ingredients. This production covers a variety of styles, from reds and whites to sparkling wines, with many winemakers focusing on quality.
