This Ramos Pinto is a bold statement – a wine that seems to have bottled the very sunshine of the Douro Valley. It’s deeply coloured, almost opaque, with flashes of blue hinting at its refined character. The aromas are powerful, dominated by the flavour of ripe grapes, with a touch of fig sweetness adding a sophisticated note, and a whisper of anise that’s utterly captivating. On the palate, it’s a full-bodied wine with an unbelievably smooth texture, showcasing remarkable complexity – perfect with aged cheeses or, perhaps, a good Iberian ham. Those 93 points from Robert Parker weren’t awarded lightly.
