Founded in 1889, the Royal Wine Company of Northern Portugal—known colloquially as the “Royal Winery”—caused a great confusion between the new and the old Royal Companies, the latter being the Old Royal Company of Porto Wines. Over time, the Pombalina Royal Company, established in 1756, came to be called “Old Royal Company” and adopted that name as its commercial brand. The century‑old Royal Winery, created under the patronage of the Marquess of Pombal, eventually became a purely patrimonial entity and was later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port brands such as Taylor’s. The year of bottling may not match the illustration provided.
