The historic wine region of Tokaj-Hegyalja lies in north‑eastern Hungary, close to the borders of Slovakia and Ukraine. The area covers only 275 square kilometres (55 km long and 30 km wide). Today the planted area is about 6,200 hectares, with four per cent extending into Slovakia. Tokaj-Hegyalja became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002 and holds the world’s oldest vineyard classification.
