Description

The Torre do Frade is a family agricultural venture situated in the municipality of Monforte in the heart of Alto Alentejo, southeast Portugal, very close to the border with Spanish Estremadura. Its history dates back to the distant year 1384, when the original owner donated the land to the hermits of the Order of Saint Augustine, where the friars established a convent that operated until 1834, when religious orders were expelled from Portugal by Joaquim António de Aguiar, then Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs and Justice. Following the friars’ expulsion, the land was sold at public auction and purchased by the family in 1839. Since that day, its mission has focused on producing food products of excellence with a quality index above the ordinary. (image merely illustrative)
