Aware of the enormous potential of Cantanhede’s lands for producing superior‑quality wines, a group of 100 farmers founded the Adega Cooperativa de Cantanhede in 1954. Today the cooperative boasts around 700 active vineyard owners and an average annual grape harvest of 6 to 7 million kilograms. It is the leading producer in the Demarcated Region of Bairrada, accounting for 30–40 % of the region’s total output and certifying roughly 80 % of its own production.
