Tawnies are red wines made from the same grapes as Rubies, but they only age two to three years in casks before moving to barrels. These allow the wine more contact with the wood and air. Thus Tawnies breathe more, oxidising and maturing quickly. Due to the high oxidation, Tawnies lose the initial red colour of the wines, gaining lighter tones such as amber, and flavours of dried fruit like nuts or almonds. With age Tawnies acquire even more aromatic complexity, enriching their aromas. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown. (Image is purely illustrative)
