“The Valbuena from Vega Sicilia – a younger, rather more relaxed sibling of the Único. Primarily Tempranillo with a touch of Merlot, it’s still finding its feet, presenting a lovely, slightly faded cherry colour. Hints of orange suggest a beautifully managed oxidative evolution, a hallmark of the house’s well-used oak barrels. There’s a remarkable balance between fresh fruit and tobacco/leather notes, with incredibly smooth tannins and a spiced finish reminiscent of vanilla. It’s a testament to Vega Sicilia’s skill, though lacking the grandeur of the Único. Wonderful with grilled red meats – a simple, utterly delicious pairing.”
