Description

The land that would become Vega Sicilia was contested for years between Peñafiel and the Monastery of Valbuena, and in 1477 the monks and the council reached an agreement. The latter would hold jurisdiction and the arable land, while the monks would maintain forest cover. It was not until 1577 that the name Vega de Sicilia first appeared in history, referring to the estate. For centuries the property was managed and purchased from the Marquess of Valbuena by Toribio Lecanda in 1848, when his son Eloy Lecanda began producing wine professionally in the estate’s cellar. Thus arose the need to build facilities, offices and aging warehouses, with the aim of producing wine of a quality comparable to that made in Bordeaux. In 1982 the Álvarez family acquired the estate, staying true to the objective: wine is produced only in exceptional vintages.
