Barão de Vilar, Vinhos S.A. was founded in January 1996 from a stock of wines purchased by Fernando Luiz Van Zeller and later passed on to his two sons, Fernando and Álvaro. Its corporate name revives a noble title granted by Queen Maria II of Portugal to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, 1st Baron of Vilar, in 1836, a title that, through descent, remains in direct possession of the family. Before Barão de Vilar was established, the Van Zeller family owned Quinta do Noval, one of the most renowned estates in the Port wine sector, from which comes the legendary “Vintage 1931 Nacional”, considered one of the two best wines of the twentieth century by Wine Spectator. Today, Barão de Vilar is known as Van Zeller Wine Collection, a company that embodies a collection of values, ideas, stories, and wines. (illustrative image)
