In 1961, at just 21 years old, George leased five hectares of land from his father in Mangere, Auckland, and began his vineyard. The first harvest took place in 1962, producing his first wine, which he named Villa Maria. Filled with a strong desire to progress, and now married to his wife Gail, George gathered the conditions needed to move the project forward. Thus, in 1970, having already spent years producing red and white wines, he began hiring people who would help him grow the company, which today employs 250 staff and exports wine to more than 50 countries around the world. Villa Maria Estates is thus the example of sustainability, innovation and quality in New Zealand, recognized worldwide.
