In 1961, at just 21, George rented five hectares of his father's land in Mangere, Auckland, and planted his first vines. The inaugural harvest came in 1962, yielding the first bottle of Villa Maria. Driven by a strong ambition and already married to his wife Gail, he set the stage for the venture. By 1970, after already producing red and white wines for years, he began hiring staff, building a company that now employs 250 people and ships wine to over 50 countries worldwide.
