Carcavelos, a demarcated wine region since 1908, lies very close to the mouth of the Tagus River, within the parishes of São Domingos de Rana and Carcavelos in the municipality of Cascais, and part of the parish of Oeiras in the municipality of the same name. The fame of Carcavelos wines stretches back through the centuries. The Marquis of Pombal, who produced them at his estate in Oeiras, held them in such high regard that King José I presented them to the court in Beijing in 1752. For centuries, winemaking was the most important economic activity in the parish of Carcavelos. Its historic name, quality, and typicity were officially recognized by a Royal Charter in 1908.
