In 1996, Ernst Loosen took over the J. L. Wolf winery in the Pfalz region, which has been steeped in tradition since 1756. Villa Wolf wines are born from vineyards located in Wachenheim and Forst, in northern Pfalz on the edge of the Middle Haardt, whose importance for producing exceptional wines was recognised almost two centuries ago, in 1828, by the Royal Bavarian Government when they were included in a vineyard classification system akin to Burgundy’s Grand Cru. The unique regional climate of the Middle Haardt, sheltered by the Haardt and Wasgau mountains, is very mild and warm; the soils rich in calcium, basalt, and sandstone minerals, coupled with the great age of the vines, are the essential elements of this ideal terroir for producing dry, high‑extract wines that can only be made from very ripe grapes. All grapes are hand‑picked selectively, with only the ripe and healthy bunches turned into dry wines. First‑class vineyards, old vines, and low yields form the basis for the expressive, terroir‑driven wines of Villa Wolf – top‑tier dry wines from the Pfalz that complement Ernst Loosen’s fruit‑forward Rieslings of Dr. Loosen from the Mosel.
