The Barão de Vilar, Vinhos S.A. was established in January 1996 from a stock of wines acquired by Fernando Luiz Van Zeller and subsequently passed to his two sons, Fernando and Álvaro. Its corporate name revives a noble title granted by Queen Maria II of Portugal to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the 1st Baron of Vilar, in 1836, a title that remains in the family’s direct possession through descent. Before the founding of Barão de Vilar, the Van Zeller family owned Quinta do Noval, one of the most renowned estates in the Port wine sector, from which the legendary “Vintage 1931 Nacional” originates – regarded by Wine Spectator as one of the two finest wines of the 20th century. Today, Barão de Vilar is known as Van Zeller Wine Collection, a company that embodies a collection of values, ideas, stories, and wines. (illustrative image)
