Barão de Vilar is a Port wine and Douro DOC house representing 14 consecutive generations of the prestigious van Zeller family, Portugal's oldest family dynasty dedicated to wine trade and production. Founded in 1996 by Fernando Luiz van Zeller and currently managed by his sons Fernando and Álvaro van Zeller, the company revives a noble title granted by Queen D. Maria II in 1836 to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the 1st Baron of Vilar. With roots tracing back to the 17th century, when wine merchants Jorge Fernandes and Francisco da Silva Moura, family ancestors, were among the largest wine traders recorded in the Imposição Books (1620-1640), Barão de Vilar benefits from a unique viticultural heritage. Álvaro van Zeller, the house's current winemaker, began his career at the iconic Quinta do Noval, one of the most emblematic estates in the Douro region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The company produces a complete range of Port wines - including Ruby, Tawny, LBV, Colheita and Vintage - as well as still DOC Douro wines from their properties in the Douro Superior, a sub-region renowned for exceptional viticultural conditions. Barão de Vilar wines reflect three centuries of family tradition among the terraces and people of the Douro, combining traditional methods with modern winemaking techniques. The brand stands out for its historical connection to the development of the Douro region, contributing to the evolution of Portuguese viticulture and keeping alive the centuries-old tradition of Port and Douro wines, under the supervision of the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto.
