Casta tinta autóctone do noroeste de Espanha (Bierzo, Valdeorras, Ribeira Sacra), a Mencía produz vinhos tintos aromáticos, frescos e ligeiramente minerais, com notas vivas de cereja vermelha, ervas e flores. A casta prospera em solos de xisto e granito e em altitude, onde expressa um perfil transparente, de influência atlântica — por vezes comparado a Borgonhas mais leves. Mesma casta que a Jaen portuguesa, com quem partilha uma reputação renovada.
